Garcia said “We were great for seconds on end.” I was lucky to see Jerry play for about 1,000,000 seconds exactly. Thanks for your 1,000,000 views here . Dave Davis wrote this blog for 500 posts and 5 years from 2015 to 2019. Contact me at twitter @gratefulseconds

30 Days of The Dead, 2010-2015: Of 180 Selections, I Only Saw 4 (More on June 12, 1976!)

I saw 80 Grateful Dead Shows or about 4% of their entire history.  However of 180 selections released in the six years of 30 Days of the Dead, I only saw four:    (NOTE: the link is updated through 2016)

2011: Lazy Lightning->Supplication 1976-06-12 Boston Music Hall
2012: None
2013: The Music Never Stopped 1976-06-12 Boston Music Hall
2013: Passenger 1979-05-07 Lafayette College, Easton, PA
2014: Looks Like Rain 1976-06-12 Boston Music Hall  Playing Here

Beautiful Voices on June 12, 1976

There are 14,414 days between today and my second Grateful Dead concert. I had seen my first show three nights earlier on June 9, 1976 in the same Boston Music Hall and I was happy to see more.

This was the only show I was ever late to and we came into the show during the third song The Music Never Stopped missing a Samson & Delilah opener and an outstanding Row Jimmy.

There is a show of rare song selection and pairing including a rare second set opener of The Wheel, a combination of Wharf Rat>Comes A Time and an encore of Sugar Magnolia>US Blues>Sunshine Daydream.

This is also a FM radio broadcast, thus was an early tape in my collection.

When I listened to the first set this morning, I recalled hearing my only Mission In The Rain that I ever heard with the Dead and it is beautiful.  What I didn't remember was the Looks Like Rain that follows.

.The 1976 Grateful Dead had beautiful voices, Jerry, Bobby and Ms Donna Jean Godchaux,  Listen to  Jerry's Mission, but stay for the Looks Like Rain with Bobby and Donna.  There is some fun banter in the middle.  This Looks Like Rain is the November 19 pick for 30 Days of the Dead 2014.

The whole show is here,

Fare Thee Well Day Three: July 5, 2015

So when you open with China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider and then plump into Estimated you feel like you are in the beginning of a nice second set. But in Chicago for the "last show" this was the start of the first set of the last show.  The highlight for me was Truckin>Cassidy (which is playing in the background), i am just a fan of the weird and unusual.

July 3 Blog Post
July 4 Blog Post

This was the "greatest hits' show, the one released independently of the three show box set which just arrived at the Davis house yesterday(still waiting for the blu ray of the whole run). So instead of an era show like the first four, we got a show of better known Dead songs like the first three, Samson, Throwing Stonesm, Terrapin, Unbroken Chain and a powerful ending of Not Fade Away, Touch of Grey and then a beautiful Attics of My Life to end it all (well "end it" until the John Mayer tour started three months later :)

1978-11-25 in New Haven: My Shortest Grateful Dead Show

37 Years Ago Tonight, I went to my shortest Grateful Dead show. It lasted 73 seconds, which you are hearing now. We listen to the FM broadcast of the prior night from Passiac as we drove down from Maine towards New Haven, and Jerry's voice did not sound good, especially in the second set. They made up this show on January 17, 1979, my last night as a teenager. Enjoy

Despite no show, police only arrested 16 people after arresting 19 before the cancellation. The show was rescheduled for http://gratefulseconds.blogspot.com/2017/11/this-deadhead-ends-his-teenage-years.html

Fare Thee Well Day Two: July 4, 2015

The middle show of the three was the 1980s show with the dissident Golden Road as an added highlight.

This was fun, we finally figured out how to get out of the stadium in under an hour and we waved that flag. The first three songs of Shakedown, Liberty and Standing on the Moon moved us into 1979 and the 1980s for the Fare Thee Well series.  While I consider the rest of the first set the weakest portion of the weekend. However, Bird Song and Golden Road was a fabulous second set opening, and the great 1980-era Sailor/Saint and West LA were truly fun. Trey's take on Foolish Heart gave us a 1988-1991 warm and comfy feeling and Bobby took a great stab at Stella Blue, which paired with Days Between the next night, paid strong tribute to Mr Garcia up there in the sky looking down.  The rock n roll band came on and finished up with the expected OMSN and US Blues, with the Empire State Building playing a big role in the patriotic feeling at the end.  Great show again guys.
